Tryin’ to explain Net Neutrality

October 29th, 2006

I know a lot of people have asked their selfs, what the hell is Net neutrality? It’s all over the news, you see commercials like this. I’m gonna try and clarify this as simple as possible.

neutrality.jpg

This is the theory:

If I pay to connect to the Net with a certain quality of service, and you pay to connect with that or greater quality of service, then we can communicate at that level.

Basically what this means is that every internet user should pay for content received from the Net in different levels, apposed to paying your ISP for delivering an internet connection.
The net neutrality debate is divided into two camps:

  • Fighting against net neutrality are the telecom companies and cable providers, who provide Internet access to consumers. Net Neutrality would give them the ability to charge content providers to use their bandwidth and, in essence, have access to their subscribers. The telecoms claim that they need revenue to make necessary updates to Internet infrastructure and wouldn’t receive funding.
  • Opposing them are content providers like Google, Amazon, and non-profits like MoveOn.org. They think the internet in not “neutral” in that way and should receive revenue.

I’m with the telecoms on this, even though they screw you up here in Belgium.
Two main voices have emerged, each supporting one side of the issue. HandsOff.org, or “Hands off the Internet,” is in favor of the telecoms. In favor of Net Neutrality is SavetheInternet.com.

Now I’ve only scratched the surface of Net Neutrality, it’s a lot more complicated. When you hear something in the news, you can at least understand it.

World’s greatest dad

World’s greatest Dad

dad.jpg

Touching story about a father that does everything to make his mentally and physically disabled son happy.

That day changed Rick’s life. “Dad,” he typed, “when we were running, It felt like I wasn’t disabled anymore!”

I read this with tears in my eyes, just awesome, that is a dad of the century, “The worlds greatest Dad”. They saved each other.
I feel like I need to try to be a better person from now on.

Firefox 2- Rediscover the Web

October 26th, 2006

I’ve been using the beta builds for a while, but the Mozilla corporation just released version 2 of their next generation browser Firefox.
Major changes for me are:

  • Spell checking: I guess you guys will expect perfectly written blog posts now.
  • Session restore: Restores tabs when starting firefox, now I don’t need an extension for that either.
  • Other UI changes, looks and feels a little better, not noticeable.

I personally like the browser for the customizability (that isn’t even a word according to firefox).
Because it’s open-source, people can create applications based on Firefox, like Flock which is a browser with build in blogging client, RSS reader, Flickr manager. And of course the extensions, that I couldn’t live without.

Diddy TV? Anyone?

October 25th, 2006

diddytv.jpg

“Ya boy D” and Burger King partnered up to bring you Diddy TV, a Youtube channel featuring short clips of him in his his everyday life. And this of course to promote Diddy’s new album Press Play.
In this clip he states that him and Burger King “bought” a Youtube channel, well guess what Sean: Channels are free.

I personally don’t like the guy, he raps like a robot, great entertainer though. He can go buy himself another Ferrari with this money.

It’s great that all these music artists are becoming actively involved with the internet thanks to services like Myspace, Blogger and Youtube. That way we can see a more human side of are favorite musician. Just think about it, do you know any music artist that doesn’t have a myspace page.

Sony BRAVIA - Paint

October 23rd, 2006

bravia.jpg

I’ve posted a while back about the colorful Sony Bravia commercial with the bouncing balls and some behind the scenes footage of their newest commercial.

Well, they just finished their newest commercial.
The new Advert for Sony Bravia featuring massive paint explosions took 10 days and 250 people to film. Huge quantities of paint were needed to accomplish this, which had to be delivered in 1 tonne trucks and mixed on-site by 20 people.

Workings of the internal combustion engine

October 22nd, 2006

I’m back with another video from the tube.
This is a great way to show someone the workings of the internal combustion engine. It’s a 3D animation of how an engine is assembled and operates.
It must’ve took a lot of time to create this.

Yes, Tom Green still lives

October 21st, 2006

tomgreen.JPGIf you’re ever wondering what Tom Green’s doing with his time lately, you might want to check his Internet talk show, “Tom Green Live.” ( Live episodes at the On Demand section).
After his TV show was canceled, he thought he’d try it on his own.

It’s actually very funny, beyond my expectations. He’s got some great guests on the show like Gift of gab from Blackalicious, Tony Hawk, Steve-O puked on Tom which was great, Jurassic 5 performed.
Lots of fun, Tom isn’t such a sadistic bastard as he used to be, he still has his moments.
I watched the episode with special guest Kevin Rose from digg.com earlier, extremely funny.

I do think he needs to attract more viewers, cause he doesn’t have a lot, in spite of the great guests. I think he needs a redesign of his website, some RSS feeds and get himself on itunes, ..yeah I’m a geek.

Adjusting… rapidly

October 21st, 2006

Metafilter user blogs during a 90 day sentence in jail.

They keep saying, “So… just a couple more weeks, huh, Al?”
I keep saying, “Yep, you bet. That’s what they tell me.”
I don’t believe it for a second.
