Postal Service covers Flaming Lips

May 27th, 2008

In my opinion, the new Death Cab for Cutie album can’t compare to previous efforts.

I do like this The Flaming Lips cover by Ben Gibbard’s other electro-pop project, with Dntel’s Jimmy Tamborello.

That 8-bit electro jingle is taken from that Timbaland track, but it works, I like it.

M83 - Saturdays = Youth

May 9th, 2008

m83saturdays.jpg

As an M83 listener you might be a little disappointed at first that Saturdays = Youth doesn’t sound as big or “epic” as Before the Dawn Heals Us. I had that same feeling for half a listen.
Like Stereogum says, that shit is plenty epic. Even the P4kers like it, they call it the vertical push on Before the Dawn Heals Us.

The nostalgic feel for the 80’s is what French musician Anthony Gonzalez inspired on this record. An ode to the ever great John Hughes films and the birth of electronic synths. The album cover really describes it best.

The album is full of breathy Kate Bush like vocals, melodic guitar riffs and echoed-up drums, just that classic 80’s sound with a modern electronic touch. Electro pop or shoegaze with a repetitive ending chorus for each song that doesn’t get tiresome, on the contrary, it just gives it that extra layer of power which makes it that bit more spectacular.

Not often does an album like this have such an impact on me, maybe I experienced a little too much late 80’s media. Nonetheless a highly recommended listen to an open mind.
Check the video for Graveyard Girl after the jump.

Atlas Sound - “Recent Bedroom”

May 1st, 2008

Really don’t like the video, looks so staged, but listen to that silky smooth song a couple of times.
