Every once in a while I really get excited about a movie, mostly a simple, overlooked indie film, which is worth blogging about cause no one else does (check Be Kind Rewind and The Fountain).
Based on a book, the movie revolves around a night out in Nyc. In search for their abandoned drunk friend and the concert location of possibly the greatest band (fictional), two socially reluctant teens are drawn together by their musical connection and their love/hate relationship.
Nick and Norah is a simple, but smartly observed teen romance which gives me the same kind of feeling as the early John Hughes movies like The Breakfast Club or Ferris Bueller. With it’s genuinely funny moments and the style of filming, it also resembles more contemporaries like Garden State, which is one of my favorite movies.
It’s about the little things like a clerk pikking the puke out of his freezer or Randy the rapping hipster with his one breakdancing fan. It all comes together as a wonderful experience.
Again, this is in no way a perfect, or even a great film. Logically it isn’t, but if you’re anything like me, you’ll adore it just for the series of events. Plus the great selection of songs makes for a great soundtrack.
Don’t miss this hidden little gem.
