Nosaj Thing – Drift

nosajthing_drift

You can’t read much about Nosaj Thing aka Jason Chung (as simple as Jason spelled backwards) without finding a reference to Flying Lotus. The two are both active in the LA beat culture and have a comparable style, which some would describe as instrumental glitch-hop, whatever that means. But there’s just as much difference in technique and overall ambiance as any of the following artists, which I have no doubt were an influence in the creation of Drift. Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Burial.

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the 24 year old’s debut LP only to find that the album as a whole ages well.
Unlike Flylo’s acclaimed Los Angeles, it feels like it’s being played in a big empty space, carefully producing a minimal and spacious sensation at the same time. Best experienced as a whole, the album works its way through a collision of styles with crunchy, sensible and carefully placed beats at first and a soundscape of organic, spacey sounds on a majority of tracks right after.

A whirlwind of haunting progression it certainly is.
