Moon is a magnificent story about a man whose sole purpose is harvesting an alternative fuel source on, you know, the moon. His captivity and isolation confronts him whereas loneliness and strange happenings make him question his sanity.

Written and directed by Duncan Jones, starring the very charismatic Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey’s voice. And yet, this is what is considered a low-budget movie compared to Hollywood type production, but still substantially more than say Brick or Napoleon Dynamite. Although it doesn’t feel that way, I feel like I have to plug this movie if only for originality and thoughtful film making.

Moon has a 2001: A Space Odyssey feel to it, deliberately I presume, where all things feel spacious, open and extremely minimalistic. The movie doesn’t cut corners either, but gets straight to the point.

It’s a small film with great ideas, which leaves you in a quiet state of contemplation long after, much like Josdigital favorite The Fountain accomplished in a way. Compelling story and a promising debut by a fairly unknown director in uprising.
Find this hidden gem, I’m telling.

Superhero movies are a genre that’s mostly seen as big budget profits. Its target is a large audience, so easy thrills and superficial action sequences are sadly too often the main focus.
For the better, the last couple of years we’ve seen some truly awespiring pieces in this genre, including this adaptation of Alan Moore’s bestseller. Don’t get me wrong, this movie also has its share of easy thrills like some show-off special effects or an easy romance with awkward moments we can all find sympathy with.

But director Zach Snyder, the guy behind Dawn of the dead, and the widely acclaimed 300, doesn’t easily compromise. His previous work is also both gruesome and dark.

The movie delivers a more realistic view on how superheros would operate in everyday society. The first 10 minutes shows an ingenious and informative opening credits montage sequenced to Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are a-Changin” which blew my away.

With an almost 3 hours long running time, it remains spectacular and compelling all the way through, partly due to a stylish cinematography which sets a smooth but tense emotive atmosphere.
Part film noir type story telling through the griddy Rorschach character is the most brutal while the Dr. Manhattan character makes us question why humanity needs surviving in a world without hope.

All in all, opinions are widely spread, I think it’s a good adaptation to the graphic novel which lacks some heart but hugely makes up in style. A magnificent spectacle in sound and vision it certainly is.

It’s hard to think of Sigur Rós as your ordinary band, first off they have their own made up language which slightly resembles Icelandic, they have a very unique way of composing and Jonsi’s voice alone sets them miles apart.

Heima translates to “at home”, so it’s self evident that their first feature film is intended to reveal a passion or devotion towards their home, Iceland, the land of many musical marvels, the country that’s economically falling apart right now, an island with such great beauty exhibited in this film in an uncomposed natural way.

The documentary chronicled a series of free, unannounced concerts around the country with a mix of acoustic sets and larger scale concerts for a select audience.. Whether it’s an abandoned fish factory with unusual acoustic characteristics or an open air concert near a small isolated village, still maintaining a very intimate atmosphere, it leaves a beautiful audiovisual experience and feels every bit as mystical as a Sigur Rós album.

This astonishing portrait predates their last effort, but to me best brings out their most subtle album, “()” aka The Bracket Album. Even for a first time listener it’s a great introduction. Take a look at the trailer and let your senses speak for itself.

I don’t recommend it but the entire film in it’s crappiest quality is available at google video.
