Up (2009)
4/10
Anything Pixar is fun for everyone, straight forward inventive comedy and adventure, but sadly feels monotonous. I mean it's fun, just never tickled my senses.

Hachiko: A Dog's Story (2009)
9/10
Breath-taking, always engaging, wonderful tale about a man and his relation with a dog. A great film where Lasse Hallstrom once again proves to be a worthy director of a masterpiece filled with emotion and pure sentiment. I do admit.. I balled up.

Avatar (2009)
9/10
It's a consensus among all. Astonishing, groundbreaking and just overwhelming. The only critique worth pointing out is lack of a compelling story, but that's just picking dust.

Pandorum (2009)
5/10
The movie is filled with great ideas, which is a real joy, but sadly all the action sequences and quick cuts left an unstructural mess. Highly conceptual, but nothing to look out for.

A Serious Man (2009)
7/10
As a Coen bros fan, it's a real joy to witness their specific and perfected style of filmmaking, the cinematography and their effortless way of portraying with just a still image. But the subject, which apparently is a retelling of The Book of Job, is less intriguing than what Coen fans expect.

I thought Bullock's Oscar nomination is a bit overrated, but nonetheless the film is fairly decent, heartwarming and emotional, but sadly relies too much on cheesy dramatization and clichés.

With all these war movies capturing the same topic, it's still great to see a film be both unpretentious and intense. Not overly dramatized nor overwhelming. Just decent.

The Brothers Bloom (2008)
7/10
Fun, evocative and beautiful cinematography, but aims a little too much towards Wes Anderson film making which already is an acquired taste for many, like me.

The Girlfriend Experience (2009)
5/10
Even though the movie is all dialog, it never lost my attention. Nothing extraordinary, nothing to look out for, nothing too interesting.

Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
7/10
A marvelous 'Alice in Wonderland'-like tale, but to me the way that Jonze creates an atmosphere is far superior than the movie itself. It's a great feeling you get, but even then feels a little too stretched out.

Surrogates (2009)
3/10
It's a movie built around a concept, feels too fictitious even for a sci-fi film and just poor directing. One of the worst films I've seen this year.

Antichrist (2009)
6/10
Von Trier is too dark, too experimental, too depressing for me to fully enjoy, but the way he draws you in is mindblowing, definitely only for film fanatics. I'm impressed but I don't feel good about myself.

District 9 (2009)
9/10
Groundbreaking film making with a limited budget that doesn't aim for a cinematic feel. It's an interesting, emotional and visionary sci-fi thriller. Brilliant.

(500) Days of Summer (2009)

Sweet, funny, original, charming, creative, wonderful, I could go on.. I love this movie about as much as Garden State, a fresh breeze in the romantic comedy genre. Also an amazing soundtrack.

I guess it's a pretty thrilling story and all, but nothing really did it for me. Well made and visually interesting but the story seems too stretched out. Also the gunfire audio effects are way too loud apposed to the dialog, drove me nuts.

Terminator Salvation (2009)
6/10
My expectations were probably too high and a comparison to the first 2 is unreasonable, but nothing stands out, nothing works, just an average action film. Bummer.

Year One (2009)
4/10
It makes me sad that a high concept movie, anticipated by many, gets only 3 laughs out of me. It's stale, child-like and feels like a lazy effort all around. Steer clear.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

I can't think of anything good to say, so I best shut up. Yet another superhero flick lost in the overstacked pile of Hollywood junk.

Watchmen (2009)

"I think it’s a good adaptation to the graphic novel which lacks some heart but hugely makes up in style. A magnificent spectacle in sound and vision it certainly is."

Things We Lost in the Fire (2007)

The only thing holding me back was the lack of a good storyline. It felt compelling, sincere and the whole cast is great but just doesn't stick. Great rent though.

Push (2009)

Decent directed for the most part, terribly written. Some costly scenes, a hot girl and some superpowers always makes big bucks in the theaters.

Typical experimental Van Sant. Intriguing , but I wish it were more Finding Forrester than Elephant.

Gran Torino (2008)

Again I love all things Eastwood, including this, but most of the dialog (and all performances besides Clint's) feels unconvincing and even laughable. I enjoyed it but it's not something to write home for.

Twilight (2008/I)

It's a bunch of hyped up typical teen romance with super-hero covers for thrills. Knowing that it's directed for an audience of teenage girls, it's pretty enjoying as is.

Ong bak 2 (2008)

Part 1 shows us that Tony Jaa is a master at what he does, he defies both gravity and physics. All creativity goes to the well-choreographed action sequences rather than the plot. Just sit back and enjoy.

The Reader (2008)

Compelling visionary cinema with magnificent performances. Doesn't over dramatize the events, it leaves all the thinking to you, makes you ethically aware. My favorite of '09 so far.

Miracle at St. Anna (2008)

Action sequences and acting felt 30 years old and even child-like. Movie has a huge pacing problem. A Spike Lee directed and a Blanchard score combo does move, but only after the 3rd quarter.

RocknRolla (2008)

After two great movies, Guy Ritchie's style gets tedious and monotone. Story is forgettable and the characters felt unconvincing. Nonetheless it's hip, badass and gritty.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

The Wrestler (2008)
9/10
I'm a proud Aronofsky follower today (The Fountain FTW). Delved deeply in this intense character study, he leaves a mesmerizing experience of deep emotions and admiration. Even in the midst of all things emotional, you notice how intuitive everything is shot and how great it looks. My favorite of 08.
